Teaching Front Paws on Touch Pad

Many dogs are not in tune with their hind legs/bums, and must be taught how to use them independently of their front end. While these beginning steps target the front paws on the elevated platform, the goal and progression in the following videos demonstrate how it is easier to get the back legs moving once the front paws have a clear elevated platform such as this. Go slowly with these first steps.

Rear End Awareness Part 2

This is second part of the progression of practicing rear end awareness. Be sure to keep these sessions relatively short and pay careful attention to where your lure hand is. Give a high frequency of rewards for simply 1-2 steps. If they step off the touch pad, simply lure them back on and try for another back leg step.

At this point, while it may seem like you haven’t done much, you’ve already done most of the work by laying the foundation solidly. Continue building a few shuffle steps and still rewarding at a high frequency. Don’t ask for too much “duration” (lots of steps) too soon, or it will become defeating for both you and your dog. Slow and steady.

Rear End Awareness part 4

At about this point, you should be able to have your dog move around the bowl with decent fluidity, and without them moving their front feet much. Once you see this, you may remove the bowl and begin to practice this without. Try variations like having your dog in front of you and shuffle to your side, or having them move in circles directly in front of you while you stand out of the way. The more practice they get with this, the easier it will be for anything requiring rear end awareness. Have fun!

The intermediate course is a continuation of the basic obedience course with a focus on the progression of duration heeling, duration “stay”, adding in distractions, and proofing all behaviors in public.

This course is ideal for those struggling to get their dogs to listen while out in public, but even further than that, doing so in a way their dogs will enjoy the process and be successful as a team.

The focus heeling course also follows step-by-step instructions on what to do first, second and so on. It also includes commonly run-into issues and ways to address them.
