How to train your dog to be calmer:
A calm and well-behaved dog is a joy to live with. They are less likely to bark excessively, jump on people, or destroy your belongings. If your dog is a bit on the energetic side, don't worry, there are plenty of things you can do to teach them to be calm.
1. Provide plenty of exercise
A tired dog is a good dog! Make sure your dog is getting enough exercise each day. This will help to burn off energy and reduce stress. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day.
2. Teach impulse control
Impulse control is the ability to resist temptation. This is an important skill for all dogs, but it is especially important for dogs who are prone to being excitable/who have high prey-drive. There are a number of exercises you can do to teach your dog impulse control, such as "stay" and "leave it."
3. Create a calm environment
Dogs are very sensitive to their environment. If your home is chaotic and noisy, it will be difficult for your dog to relax. Try to create a calm and peaceful environment for your dog. This may mean limiting visitors, keeping noise levels down, and providing your dog with a quiet place to rest.
4. Reward calm behavior
When you see your dog being calm, be sure to reward them. This could be with a treat, calm praise, or petting. By rewarding calm behavior, you are teaching your dog that this is the desired behavior.
5. Be patient
Training a dog to be calm takes consistency and patience. Don't get discouraged if your dog doesn't learn overnight. Just keep practicing and be consistent with your training.
