From Chipmunk Whisperer to Dog Trainer: A Journey of Passion
My story of becoming a dog trainer isn't your typical career path. It's a tale of following my heart, even when it led me down unexpected roads. (For a deeper dive, check out my YouTube channel where I’ll be posting the telling of my story soon!)
Growing up on the East Coast, I was a born adventurer. Barefoot and outdoors, I spent hours captivated by all creatures, from house pets to wild critters. This fascination went beyond mere observation; I yearned to connect with them.
For example: one day I observed a chipmunk following a regular route around my house to the bird feeder to get food. I would sit where the seeds fell a distance away from where she collected them. Slowly, I moved closer, offering food from my hand. Eventually, this tiny creature was happily munching away in my palm, content with my company. She soon allowed me to carry her around petting her, happy for the free food.
When I moved to California, it brought a career shift, but not a fulfilling one. However, my Master's in Special Education opened my eyes to the science behind behavior. Still, a deep longing for animals remained.
After graduation, I took a leap of faith, hopping between minimum-wage jobs until I found a way to combine passion and profession. Starting a dog walking business was a step in the right direction, but clients' training questions fueled a desire to truly help with behaviors.
This led me to a local dog training facility, offering board-and-train programs and protection dog training. From the first day, I was hooked. The environment was electric and I was a sponge for learning.
One pivotal moment cemented my path. Working with a dog, a trainer asked when I planned to give the dog a break. Confused, I replied it had only been five minutes. Their laughter revealed the truth: it had been nearly half an hour!
In that moment, it hit me. This wasn't just work; it was flow – a state of complete absorption and joy I'd never experienced before. It was a sign.
I spent time managing the facility, learning from other trainers. Eventually, the dream of having my own business became reality and I moved to establish my own training business.
The greatest reward? Helping people create a connection with their dogs and changing themselves for better in the process. Witnessing the transformation – the shift from challenging relationships to profound bonds – is truly life-changing.
Since then, I've met incredible humans, phenomenal trainers, and inspiring (though sometimes challenging) dogs. Every moment, even the tough ones, has fueled my passion.
This is where I belong. This is what ignites my soul. And my mission? To empower others to experience the same level of authentic fulfillment by fostering that incredible connection between humans and their canine companions.
