Basic puppy training commands: Laying the foundation for a well-behaved canine companion
Basic puppy training

Welcoming a furry bundle of joy into your home is a momentous occasion filled with excitement and anticipation. However, amidst the joy, it's important to remember that puppies are blank slates requiring guidance and training to become well-behaved members of the household.

Basic puppy training commands serve as the foundation for a harmonious relationship between you and your canine companion. By teaching your puppy essential commands, you can effectively communicate with them, instill obedience, and help prevent unwanted behaviors.

Here are some basic puppy training commands that every owner should teach their furry friend:

Sit: The "sit" command is one of the most fundamental and versatile commands a dog can learn. It can be used to calm an excited puppy, prevent them from jumping on people, or simply get them to stay in one place.

  • Stay: The "stay" (or implied stay) command is another essential obedience cue that allows you to keep your puppy in a specific position until you release them. This command is particularly useful in situations where you need your puppy to remain still, such as when crossing the street or waiting at the vet's office.

  • Come: The "come" command is arguably the most important command a dog can learn. It allows you to call your puppy back to you, regardless of distractions. This command can be a lifesaver if your puppy gets loose in a dangerous situation.

  • Down: The "down" command teaches your puppy to lie down on their belly or side. This command can be used to calm an excited puppy, prevent them from jumping on people, or simply get them to relax. It can also be very beneficial to practice a calm state of mind in new environments.

  • Leave it: The "leave it" command teaches your puppy to ignore distractions and objects. This command can be used to prevent your puppy from eating things they shouldn't, chasing after other animals, or picking up unwanted items.

  • Heel: “Heel” is an important command that teaches your puppy to remain at your side and not pull on the leash. It can be incredibly useful for working on engagement & focus as well as to help prevent reactivity and unwanted, overexcited greeting of strangers.

In addition to these basic commands, you may also want to teach your puppy additional commands such as "drop" "wait," and "off."

Tips for effective puppy training

  • Keep training sessions short and fun. Puppies have short attention spans, so it's important to keep training sessions brief and engaging. Aim for 3-10 minute training sessions several times a day.

  • Use positive reinforcement. Puppies are more likely to learn quickly when they are rewarded for good behavior. Use treats, praise, toys, and petting to reinforce desired behaviors.

  • Be consistent. Puppies thrive on consistency, so it's important to be consistent with your commands and expectations. If you only enforce a command sometimes, your puppy will become confused.

  • Be patient. Puppy training takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if your puppy doesn't master a command right away. Just keep practicing and they will eventually get it.

By teaching your puppy basic training commands, you can lay the foundation for a well-behaved and enjoyable canine companion. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, you can help your puppy learn the skills they need to be a valued member of your family.
